Last Time for Everything

Image
As it turns out, I'm not allowed to extend until June 1st like I wanted, so I am finishing on May 7th: Less than a week away. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I feel excited, but also not ready. I'm sure it'll be fine. A lot of things have happened. I guess that'll happen when I don't write an email for a long while. Lately we've finished up calving and are gearing up for branding and breeding. I don't like breeding, but I like branding. Unfortunately, I'll only be here for breeding. Oh well. I've also been working on building braces lately. I've almost grown tired of it, but it's still not that bad. I'm pretty pleased with how I've done; at least with some of them. It's so weird that I'm doing a lot of things for the last time on my mission, maybe the last time ever; for better or for worse. I've had my last Friday here, my last full week of work, my last time going to church in Garrison, all that sort of thing. Lo...

The Night Guard?

Image
Hello everybody! I'm sorry I haven't written in a while. My mom told me that when people ask when I'm going to write that she answers "never." So I'm proving her wrong. This week, calving has really picked up. Elder Williams and I have picked up the night shift, which I'm definitely adjusting to. So far I've helped with pulling four calves, although there have been many others. We finally finished that one fencing project last week. I'm so glad that's all done. We got to go to Greg's and Annete's wedding in St. George! It was all so good, and Golden Corral was almost just as fantastic. They even had wings! Greg is a really good guy who has worked at the ranch as a volunteer and then as a service missionary.  I loved what our Stake President said at branch conference today! He told us to keep our testimony simple, and focused on Jesus Christ. He really is at the center of all that we do in His church. You might have heard that a lot fr...

Winter Allergies

Image
Hello everyone! Sorry I haven't written in a while. I hope that you've all been well and keeping yourselves safe. Even though I haven't been writing, I have been working! I know it's not a surprise since I'm serving on a ranch, but we've been doing a lot of stuff with cows. We shipped off about 250 of them to the other ranch, and received about 30 calves from there. Feeding has also sped up a lot, and we're doing a ton of it. I never thought I'd have allergies in January. It's also been getting very cold at times. I heard it'll only get worse in calving season. Lovely. I've also got my own assigned project of rebuilding a brace and fixing its fence. It's been very satisfying so far to do it right. We've had to redo quite a few parts, but it's been worth it. I've been working on trying to improve my peacemaking skills, that definitely starts with myself. I am trying to do and be better with how I am towards my companions. I s...

Christmas Again? Featuring Dr. Pepper KOs

Image
Hello everybody! I hope that you've all been well since I last wrote. Sorry that I let so much time go by. The theme of fencing was still going strong last week. I worked on that a lot with Elders Enrico and Anderson. We've fixed a lot of fence, but there's always so much more to fix. We had a Christmas party at the church ranch close to Alamo. It was so good! For some reason, the Elders at that ranch decided that they'd rather go to Las Vegas for zone conference. But they did get to go to the temple, which is good for them. The party only had a few of us there, but it was very social and had great food. I brought some Dr. Shasta. I loved having a 2lb. steak. Very nice. I got to sing in a community choir for the Christmas concert in Baker. It was so much fun! The school orchestra, though small, is incredibly talented! I loved all of the musical numbers, and even got to do a little solo in Spanish for Silent Night. I love the community there. Even though it's so sm...

Cross-Country Fish

Hello everybody! I hope that you've all had a good week. I know I have. Last week we did feeding as usual, except we now have Elder Anderson. He misses home, but has done well here so far. We've started feeding on a big flatbed truck instead of a tractor pulling a trailer, and I don't like it as much. The bed is higher so it's harder to climb on. Also, I feel the bumps a lot more. Oh well. Beggars can't be choosers. We've also done a lot of fence work together. There have been a couple posts to gates that have been destroyed, so we redid those. We do still have a bit of fencing to do and redo. Today we had a fish fry! Elder Caldwell, a senior service missionary, caught salmon and halibut while visiting Alaska, and we all got some at his party. I just don't know how he got it so far without it going bad. I've got a new favorite job to do! I'm not sure if I like it any more than my other favorite jobs. It's chopping wood. It's really relaxing...

Thanksgiving and Happy Birthday to Me

Image
Hello everyone! I'm sorry that I haven't written in a while. I will try to write an email every week. Elder Waite left, and today we got a new Elder named Elder Anderson. So far it's been good to meet him. We'll see how that goes. We have been doing a lot of feeding. We're really gearing up for winter. We moved a bunch of calves out to Rogers and feed them every day. There have been a few of them being sick; one even died. I would show a picture of the autopsy, but I don't think that my mom would like that. The last couple of weeks, I've been doing quite a bit of fencing. I really like fixing fences. It's so peaceful. It also feels good to look at something you've finished and to see that it is good. Thanksgiving and my birthday were all great! I got to go home (my uncle Tabor's family gave me a ride, and that was so nice) and see my family and spend time with them. I even got to go to the Elko temple with a lot of extended family. Then we went...

Fall Allergies, but Not Really

Image
Hello everybody! I hope that you're doing well, I know that I am! This week was good. Although it was fast and slow at the same time. I spent most of my time helping Elder and Sister Zenger. They're temporarily living in the ranch-hand house, because we have no ranch hand, and redoing the floors, plumbing, and painting of their house. I helped a lot with taking out carpet, baseboards, and moving things. I also started painting the trimmings. It's all good work, and it's good to be inside when it's getting so cold outside. Even though it's been getting really cold, it sometimes gets warm enough that I take off my jacket while working outside, which is a nice balance. We've also just finished moving handlines, and we are about to start feeding. That's a trade I don't like since I'm pretty allergic to hay and feel miserable even hours after. The nice thing about that though is that it takes up until about 1:00, which is most of the day, so afterwa...
